The Pincer and Palmar Blocks

The palmar grasp block is to be given to children as early as 8 months. This material aids the child in developing the palmar grasp (the whole hand grasp). As the child learns that the cylinder should be placed back into the base, he/she uses the palmar grasp to grab onto it and pull it out, then he/she attempts to place it back into the hole. The repetition of this builds concentration and fine motor skills.

The pincer grasp develops after the child is purposefully using the palmar grasp. The pincer block should be offered at around 9 months, when you begin to notice the child working hard to grasp objects with the thumb and forefinger. Children love to practice this grasp, and this material is perfect for helping them perfect it.

These blocks are made of solid wood and sealed with a beeswax/flaxseed oil sealant so they are totally non-toxic. The pincer grasp block does contain a small knob. It should be inspected before each time the child uses it to ensure that the knob has not come loose. It should be used under adult supervision, as the knob could become a choking hazard should it come loose.

The dimensions of the blocks are:
Palmar- 2''L X 2''W
Pincer- 2''L X 2''W

Both items are square.

Made of ash blocks with maple dowels.
